Charlie Hebdo: Barbaric attack at the democratic heart of Europe

LogoALDELiberals and Democrats in the European Parliament have today compared the shooting at Charlie Hebdo with the September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Cecilia Wikström MEP, ALDE Coordinator on the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee, said:

Our thoughts today are with French people and the victims of this cowardly act of terror. We must stand together when fundamental rights are directly under threat as it is the case today in Paris. This was an attack against all of us, against freedom of the media and freedom of expression.  Europe should stand firm in upholding these principles at the core of our democratic societies.”

ALDE Group leader Guy Verhofstadt reacted today:

This is a tragedy for France and for Europe. This is our September 11. In 2001, we witnessed a horrible attack at the economic and financial heart of the US. Today, the barbaric attack on Charlie Hebdo has struck at the very heart of Europe, at the very heart of our values. Europe must now show solidarity, stay united and defend its democratic values.”

First Vice-President of the ALDE group, Sophie in ´t Veld (D66, Netherlands) added:

Journalists have yet again paid the ultimate price. The attack on Charlie Hebdo is an attack on our values, on the freedom of the press and the freedom of speech. We must now stand by our values and pursue a measured response.”
