Press release: Disappointed at lack of progress by member states on the asylum reform

Disappointed at lack of progress by member states on the asylum reform

Statement by Cecilia Wikström (ALDE, SE), rapporteur for the reform of the Dublin Regulation, on the Justice and Home Affairs Council:

“I am deeply disappointed at reports coming out of the Justice and Home Affairs Council today concerning the Dublin regulation and the reforms of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). Time is quickly running out if we want to find a solution to the Dublin regulation in this mandate, and citizens expect results rather than grandstanding from our leaders.”

The June summit is the last viable point for the Council to reach an agreement on entering trilogues with the European Parliament in this mandate. I hope that EU governments are willing to set enough of their differences aside at this point in order to allow for negotiations between the Parliament and Council to begin.

I am convinced that in these negotiations we can find ways forward that would allow for the creation of a functioning asylum system with adequate support for frontline states, shared responsibilities and correct management of our external borders. Without such negotiations, we stand empty handed with the current failed asylum system and no answers to citizens.”
