We need to establish a European pillar of Social rights in the EU. The financial crisis broke out about a decade ago and put our Union to the test: widespread unemployment, social exclusion and large wage gaps became realities during the first years after the crisis started. Only recently have employment numbers come back to what they looked like before the crisis erupted.
The European Union has the wind back in its sails, but now is not the time to relax.
Many citizens have expressed that unemployment and social inequalities are among the biggest challenges that we are currently facing in the EU. They are expecting that a free market economy should go hand in hand with a high social standard. That is why I am supporting the creation of a European pillar of social rights, which will safeguard sustainable jobs and growth across the Union.
