My background

I was born in 1965 and raised in Kalix, but have lived in Uppsala since the 1980’s. I hold a bachelor degree in theology from the University of Uppsala, and have been a practising priest in the Swedish Church since 1994.

As Chair of the Conference of Committee Chairs, I hold the highest post to date for a Swedish MEP since Sweden joined the EU in 1995.

I have written several books including the book När livet går sönder (When life falls apart), a publication awarded book of the year in its genre in 2004.

In 2002, I was elected to the Swedish parliament. I was re-elected in 2006, representing the liberal party, Liberalerna.

Since 2009, I am a Member of the European Parliament for Liberalerna.

My work in the European Parliament

In the European Parliament, I am a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and since June 2014, the chairman of the Petitions Committee (PETI). I have been chairman of the Conference of Committee Chairs since January 2017, which brings together all the committee chairmen of the European Parliament. I am therefore the decisive person in the coordination of the European Parliament’s legislative work.

Between 2009 and 2014, I was a member and coordinator of the Committee of Legal Affairs.

I am the lead MEP in the European Parliament for the revision of the Dublin Regulation. I also represent the liberal group in the negotiations on the asylum procedure regulation and the regulation on the EU Asylum Agency, EUAA.

I represent the liberal group in the negotiations on a new proposal for information exchange between the EU Information Systems for Borders and Security.

I represent the liberal group in the negotiations on the EU authority for the management of EU information systems in the areas of freedom, security and justice.

I am part of the Schengen System Working Group and also represents the Liberal Group in the negotiations of the annual report.

Formerly, I negotiated the Student and Research Directive and the common European trademark regulation and directive.

In 2017 I was ranked as the 4th most influential Member of the Euroepan Parliament out of 751 members by Politico.

Favourite drink: Champagne!

Hobbies: Reading, theatre, music and being with people I like. Enjoying my home in Uppsala, Sweden, and in Greece.

Travels to: Uppsala-Brussels and Brussels-Thessaloniki.

Surprise: Have studied theatre in New York. Speaks and writes Greek.
