ALDE secures debate and resolution on EU involvement in CIA torture programme

Despite opposition from some groups in the European Parliament, the Liberal and Democrat Group have today secured statements by both the European Commission and the European Council next week on EU Governments’ involvement in the CIA’s torture programme. A resolution will also be drafted for the February plenary session.

Reacting to the news this morning, Cecilia Wikstrom MEP, ALDE Coordinator on the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee commented:

”I am pleased this issue will now receive the attention in Europe it deserves, despite the opposition of some political groups. This is the first step in what we hope will be a renewed investigation into the role played by EU Member States in the CIA’s torture programme”.
