Press release from the Liberal People’s Party in the European Parliament

The histories of over fifty human rights activists from around the world, who have been risking their lives in their fight for human rights, underpins the play “Speak Truth to Power” that is being brought to the European Parliament on the 19th of February at 18.30. The show is dedicated to Dawit Isaak, the only EU-citizen currently being held as a prisoner of conscience in Eritrea for over 4 500 days.

MEP Cecilia Wikström (ALDE/Sweden) is the initiator and will take the stage along with the world famous actors Lena Olin, Dylan Bruno and Dennis Haysbert as well as several colleagues, including the European Parliament’s president Martin Schulz, the liberal group leader Guy Verhofstadt and the greens group leader Daniel Cohn-Bendit. The play is directed by Seppo Laukkanen, from the Swedish Royal Dramatic Theatre.

- “Culture can make a difference. It can open people’s hearts in a way like nothing else can. With the show I want to show that culture can make a difference. “Speak Truth to Power” highlights very courageous people, who even risked their lives in defending human rights. Their courage and desire to improve people’s lives urges and inspires us to rise and action“, says Cecilia Wikström.

- The “Speak Truth To Power” play has been performed in Stockholm, Phnom Penh, Seoul, New York, Rome, Kinshasa, Cape Town, and Doha, and it serves as a wonderful introduction to the RFK Centre’s global human rights curriculum, says Kerry Kennedy, President of the Robert F. Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights and who will participate at the event in Brussels.

- I am delighted to see these monologues highlighting some of the most courageous people on earth performed for the European Parliament. Our great thanks go to Cecilia Wikström for her leadership in making this possible, says Kerry Kennedy.
