Wikström (FP): European Parliament waives the immunity of Marine Le Pen
Press release from Folkpartiet Liberalerna in the European Parliament, 2013-07-02
The parliamentary immunity of Marine Le Pen, leader of the French National Front, has been lifted today by a large majority of the European Parliament, on the basis of a recommendation by Cecilia Wikström (Sweden, FP/ALDE).
French authorities requested that Le Pen’s parliamentary immunity be lifted so that a legal case involving allegations of “race hate” can be pursued. At a speech in Lyon in December 2010, Le Pen compared Muslims in France to the Nazi invasion during the Second World War.
The European Parliament does not take a position on the substance of such immunity cases, but only on whether there are sufficient grounds for rejecting or granting the French judicial request for lifting immunity.
- I am pleased that the European Parliament with a wide majority chose to follow my recommendation, namely to waive the immunity of Marine Le Pen. Now it’s up to the French judiciary to try her case, Wikström says in a statement.
