Press release: Migration: EU legislation to strengthen protection of children urgently needed
The ALDE Group has today called on the European Commission to come forward with a European policy framework to strengthen protection systems for refugee and migrant children, especially for unaccompanied minors.
Cecilia Wikström, ALDE LIBE coordinator, said: “The living conditions of children, particularly unaccompanied minors, who have been living in the so- called Jungle in Calais, is a disgrace for the EU. As the rapporteur for the revision of the Dublin Regulation, I am seeking possible solutions that would guarantee the safety and security of children as asylum seekers in Europe”.
“Europol has stated that up to 10 000 refugee children have disappeared during their stay in Europe. We must seek every possibility to prevent them from being exploited by unscrupulous people and to ensure that all children on our continent are provided with proper care and security”.
