The ALDE Group in the European Parliament has today welcomed the proposal of the European Commission to reform the Dublin system. The corrective measures outlined today constitute a significant step towards the development of a functioning European asylum system. ALDE calls for a genuine European migration and asylum system and urges Member States to fully respect the new proposal.
ALDE’s spokesperson on the refugee crisis and rapporteur for the reform of the Dublin Regulation in the European Parliament, Cecilia Wikström MEP added: ”There are many positive points in this reform. The proposal for an automatic mechanism to distribute refugees between EU countries is a step in the right direction. Nevertheless, it is regrettable that the Commission did not go further and propose an automatic distribution of all asylum seekers when they arrive in the EU. However, I welcome the proposal to impose clear economic sanctions on countries which do not fulfill their commitments and the strengthening of EASO’s mandate.”
”I am proud and honored to lead the European Parliament in the forthcoming negotiations with the Council and the Commission on the proposal of a revision of the Dublin regulation”.
Guy Verhofstadt, ALDE Group leader, said: ”These are positive and progressive proposals. The reform of the outdated Dublin regulation is essential if we are to deliver a collective response to the migratory pressures we face in Europe.”
”EU countries have shown themselves unable to deliver a solution to the refugee crisis under the current rules. We need a new EU centralised asylum system, based on the fair sharing of responsibility between Member States and these reforms are an important step towards that goal.”
”The financial contributions envisaged by the Commission will ensure that all Member States play their part. Tough times require bold decisions, which is why I call on Member States to give these proposals a fair hearing.”
”These reforms outlined today should go hand in hand with the development of a strong European Coast and Border Guard, which will help to reduce Europe’s dependency on President Erdogan.” |
