Wikström’s speech in plenary: Council must immediately take their responsibilities

It is unacceptable that the Council on Monday allowed a small number of Member States to block an absolutely necessary agreement. I am proud that the European Parliament sets a good example and acts as quickly as possible to help the refugees who have reached Europe.

The refugee crisis we are witnessing right now is just a small part of the crisis that may soon strike against Europe. If all member states do not immediately take their responsibilities the European union and its values will deteriorate and the consequences can be dire.
