Restraining orders throughout the EU

Until 2013, persons living under threat, with a restraining order against, for example former spouses, lacked decent opportunities to get these restraining orders recognised in other EU member states.

As a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs during the 2009-2014 parliamentary term, I participated in the writing of a bill, which made it possible for persecuted people, most often women, to now be protected throughout the EU. A restraining order issued in one member state can now easily be extended to apply throughout the EU.

The rules that entered into force in January 2015 make it possible for the people concerned to fully enjoy the freedom of movement that is the fundamental right of all EU citizens.
